Hanyang Church AI Job Training Program

[August 21, 2026] Beginning this September, Hanyang Church will launch a 12‑week AI Job Training Program. Tuition is free, and Apple MacBooks required for the training will be available for rental at cost. We are currently reaching out to various companies so that graduates can transition into real employment, and several organizations have already expressed interest. We are also seeking collaboration with relevant departments in the state government and the City of Los Angeles. Our hope is that this program will not be a one‑time event, but will grow into a sustainable initiative that connects education, employment, the local community, and industry.

There is a clear reason Hanyang Church is starting this program.

Hanyang Church is a rebooting church. We don’t simply wait for people to come inside—we are a church that goes out to find people. We continually look around our community, asking where today’s cry of “Come over to Macedonia and help us” is being heard.

This spring, we visited California State University, Northridge (CSUN), located just two blocks from our church. The church set up an official booth at the university’s Job Fair and met with students. The eyes of students searching for employment before graduation were earnest and full of longing. We witnessed firsthand the difficult reality facing young people who struggle to find work even after earning a college degree.

Two of the students we met that day are now actively serving in Hanyang Church’s AI media ministry. What is most surprising and grateful is that their words and the direction of their lives are slowly changing. We are watching Hanyang Church become not merely a place that offers part‑time work, but a warm spiritual family for them.

Through this experience, Hanyang Church discovered a way to provide practical help to young adults. We are living in the age of AI. A college diploma no longer guarantees employment. On the other hand, even those who did not have the opportunity to attend college can discover new career paths if they gain knowledge and practical skills in AI. This is why Hanyang Church is launching the AI Job Training Program. At the same time, this program is a way for the Korean immigrant church to serve and contribute to American society and the local community.

While preparing this program, I was reminded of a vocational training center that existed in the 1960s in Daerim‑dong, Yeongdeungpo‑gu, Seoul. It was close to the neighborhood where I lived, so I remember it from my childhood. Later, I learned that it was one of the centers of the Yeongdeungpo Urban Industrial Mission.

After the Korean War, the Industrial Mission provided life education, vocational training, and leadership development to young people in Korea, planting hope for the future. Although its ministry evolved with the times, its core vision remained clear:

“The church enters the workplace and the lives of workers, living among them and bearing witness to the gospel of Christ and the dignity of humanity.”

The Presbyterian Church (USA), to which Hanyang Church belongs, also offered significant support to this Industrial Mission at the time.

Today’s circumstances are very different from the past. Yet even in the midst of abundance, new forms of poverty and isolation are emerging. Without spiritual attentiveness, these realities are easy to overlook. The church must testify more clearly that God is not confined within church buildings but is actively working in people’s workplaces and daily lives. When we encounter the suffering Christ again in the realities of life, the church will gain new vitality—I am convinced of this.

As Hanyang Church begins the AI Job Training Program, we look forward to seeing what future God will open through this ministry. We plan and act, but we entrust the outcome to God, praying with anticipation.

The first cohort will be conducted in English. We hope that interest and participation will grow within the Korean‑American community so that a Korean‑language cohort can be offered in the future.

한양교회가 오는 9월부터 12주 과정의 AI Job Training Program을 시작합니다. 수강료는 무료이며, 교육에 필요한 Apple MacBook도 실비로 대여합니다. 교육을 마친 수강생들이 실제 취업으로 이어질 수 있도록 여러 기업을 알아보고 있으며, 이미 몇몇 회사가 관심을 보이고 있습니다. 또한 주정부와 LA시의 관련 부서에도 협력을 요청하고 있습니다. 이번 교육이 일회성 행사로 끝나지 않고 교육과 취업, 지역사회와 기업을 연결하는 지속적인 프로그램으로 자리 잡도록 노력하고 있습니다.

한양교회가 이 프로그램을 시작한 데에는 분명한 이유가 있습니다.

한양교회는 새롭게 출발하는 교회입니다. 그러기에 우리는 사람들을 교회 안에서 기다리는 교회가 아니라, 사람들을 찾아가는 교회가 될수 밖에 없었습니다. “마게도냐로 건너와서 우리를 도우라”는 부르짖음이 오늘 어디에서 들려오는지 늘 교회 주변을 살피고 있습니다.

올 봄에, 교회에서 두 블록 정도 떨어진 California State University, Northridge(CSUN)를 찾아갔습니다. 대학이 주최한 취업박람회(Job Fair)에 교회가 정식으로 부스를 설치하고 학생들을 만났습니다. 졸업을 앞두고 일자리를 찾는 학생들의 눈빛은 간절했습니다. 대학을 졸업해도 일할 곳을 찾기 어려운 젊은이들의 막막한 현실을 교회가 가까이에서 실감할 수 있었습니다.

그때 만난 두 학생은 지금 한양교회의 AI 미디어 사역에 열심히 참여하고 있습니다. 무엇보다 놀랍고 감사한 것은 그들의 말과 삶의 방향이 조금씩 달라지고 있다는 사실입니다. 한양교회가 그들에게 단순히 아르바이트 자리를 제공하는 장소가 아니라 따뜻한 영적 가족이 되어 가는 모습을 보고 있습니다.

이러한 경험을 통해 한양교회는 젊은이들에게 실질적인 도움을 줄 수 있는 길을 찾게 되었습니다. 지금은 AI 시대입니다. 대학 졸업장이 반드시 취업을 보장해 주는 것도 아닙니다. 반면에 대학 교육의 기회를 갖지 못했더라도 AI에 관한 지식과 실무 능력을 익힌다면 새로운 취업의 길을 발견할 수 있습니다. 이것이 한양교회가 AI Job Training Program을 시작하게 된 이유입니다. 동시에 이 프로그램은 한인 이민교회가 미국 사회와 지역사회를 섬기고 공헌하는 하나의 길이기도 합니다.

이 프로그램을 준비하면서 1960년대 서울 영등포구 대림동에 있었던 직업훈련센터가 생각났습니다. 제가 살던 동네와 가까웠기에 어린 시절부터 기억하고 있던 곳입니다. 훗날 그곳이 영등포도시산업선교회의 한 센터였다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다.

산업선교회는 6·25전쟁 이후 한국의 젊은이들에게 생활교육과 직업교육, 리더십 훈련을 제공하며 미래에 대한 소망을 심어 주었습니다. 시대에 따라 사역의 모습은 달라졌지만, 그 핵심 비전은 분명합니다. “교회가 삶의 일터와 노동자의 삶 속으로 들어가 그들과 함께 살아가며, 그리스도의 복음과 인간의 존엄을 증언한다.” 한양교회가 속한 미국장로교회도 당시 이 산업선교 사역에 많은 도움을 주었습니다.

오늘의 상황은 과거와 크게 달라졌습니다. 그러나 풍요 속에서 새로운 빈곤과 소외가 생겨나고 있습니다. 이러한 현실은 영적으로 깨어 있지 않으면 쉽게 보이지 않습니다. 교회는 하나님께서 교회당 안에만 계시는 것이 아니라 사람들의 일터와 삶의 현장에서 일하고 계심을 더욱 분명히 증언해야 합니다. 고난받으신 예수 그리스도를 삶의 현장에서 다시 만날 때 교회는 새로운 생명력을 얻게 될 것이다! 확신하고 있습니다.

한양교회는 AI Job Training Program을 시작하면서 하나님께서 이 사역을 통해 어떤 미래를 열어 가실지 기대하고 있습니다. 우리는 계획하고 실천하지만, 그 일을 통해 무엇을 이루실지는 하나님께 맡기며 설레는 마음으로 기도하고 있습니다.

첫 번째 과정은 영어로 진행됩니다. 앞으로 한인사회에서도 관심과 참여가 이어져 한국어로 진행하는 프로그램도 마련될 수 있기를 소망합니다.
